Moratorium on Deep Seabed Mining
Globalance has joined scientists, civil society, youth, industry and political leaders in supporting a call for a moratorium on deep seabed mining (DSM). This step is important due to the lack of knowledge about the impact on the ocean and numerous risks to important climate functions.
Together with a group of companies like Google, BMW, Volvo or Samsung we support an effort by the World Wildlife Fund for a moratorium on DSM.
The ocean and its ecosystems provide important benefits for people and economies across the world. However, the ocean is already heavily impacted by a multitude of factors, such as climate change, overfishing and pollution, which causes more and more malfunctions of the Earth’s natural system. Instead of adding stressors, it is imperative that we ensure a healthy ocean.
Deep seabed mining to extract minerals is such a potentially big stressor, because of the destruction, loss of biodiversity and noise it causes to the deep seabed at a continental scale. Due to the lack of knowledge about the impact on the ocean and numerous risks to important climate functions, scientists, civil society, youth, companies, and political leaders increasingly call for a moratorium on DSM.
Until these matters are sufficiently addressed, we support a moratorium as a matter of precaution and commit not to source minerals from the deep seabed and not to finance DSM-activities.
